A student needs to be in valid F-1 immigration status for at least two full-time semesters (one academic year) in order to be eligible for CPT. Rare exceptions to the requirement of one academic year: 1) Graduate students who must complete an internship before the end of one academic year in order for their degree to be granted to any student. For overseas students, paid internships in the USA are available for up to 20 hours per week of labour. In addition, during the academic semester, you have to work on campus.
